Whistler

Whistler, B.C.- It's "ski and tee" season in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada, with area golf courses set to open May 7 and skiing on Whistler Mountain open until early June.

"With renowned golf courses combined with the activities Whistler offers such as spring skiing, mountain biking, hiking and watersports, plus first-rate accommodations and the abundance of wildlife, it's no wonder the International Association of Golf Tour Operators selected British Columbia as the 2004 Undiscovered Golf Destination in the World," says Alan Kristmanson, General Manager, Whistler Golf Club.

Big Sky Golf & Country Club, designed by Robert Cupp, opened for play April 24. The course is located 25 minutes north of Whistler in the spectacular Pemberton valley and offers an 18-hole course, driving range and nine-hole executive academy course. Named one of the Top Courses in Canada by Golf Digest magazine in May 2004, Big Sky Golf & Country Club is a unique location for one- and two-day programs and the womens-only weekend offered by the Academy.

On May 7, Whistler celebrates the opening of the Nicklaus North Golf Course and Whistler Golf Club. A Jack Nicklaus "Signature Design," the Nicklaus North Golf Course is set along the shores of glacier-fed Green Lake . With challenging par threes and distinctive bunkering, this par 71 offers a memorable experience for golfers of all abilities, GPS on every cart, and a full-service golf shop and practice facility. The course plays host to a two-day womens GLC Golf School , designed and taught by long-time LPGA Tour golfer Gail Graham, former Canadian Amateur Champion Tracey Lipp and PGA champion Sheila Cowan Hood.

Originally opened in 1983, the Arnold Palmer-designed, Whistler Golf Club was Whistler's first golf course. After a $2.2 million renovation in 2000, the course re-launched with upgraded turf conditions, amenities and bunkers. The Whistler Golf Club features an extensive Learning and Performance Centre with a variety of lesson programs, club fitting and repairs. The Whistler Golf Club is a member of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program (ACSP) for golf.

Carved into the side of Blackcomb Mountain , the Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed Chateau Whistler Golf Club opens May 7. With an elevation change of more than 400 feet, the course features exposed rock faces, ledges, wildlife, ravines and waterfalls. Last season, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts partnered with David Leadbetter Enterprises to launch Whistler's David Leadbetter Golf Academy at the Chateau Whistler Golf Club. The academy offers computer and swing analysis technology, practice fairway, target greens and short game area.

Whistler, located 668 metres (2,190 feet) above sea level, boasts four golf courses featuring sprawling fairways and spectacular views of the region's snow-capped mountains. Area lakes, mountain streams, stands of ancient cedars and forested course borders offer shelter for local wildlife such as brown bears, coyote, beaver, deer, birds and more. With average summer temperatures ranging from 9 to 23 degrees Celsius (48 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit) and some of the longest days of the year May through August, players can golf from dawn to dusk and log up to three rounds daily.

Whistler is a year-round leisure and meeting destination located 120 kilometres (75 miles) north of Vancouver, B.C., Canada, and site for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Whistler has a range of accommodations totalling 5,400 rooms, and a wide selection of restaurants, bars, spas, boutiques and galleries. Summer activities range from world-renowned mountain biking and golf, to hiking, rock climbing, and watersports. The Resort Municipality of Whistler is home to a diverse community of more than 10,000 permanent residents.
